CLEMSON — Saturday will be a little different for Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik.
Why?
It will be his final Orange & White Spring Game as a Clemson Tiger.
“It is wild. It is wild. It flies by, man. I am excited to get out there,” he said.
Klubnik is entering his senior season at Clemson, and expectations are as high as they have been for the Tigers since the days of Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence. Many expect Clemson to be a Top 5 team entering the 2025 season and some feel the Tigers can seriously contend for the national championship.
Because of the hype and the fact the spring game is not on television, Clemson officials are expecting a large crowd at Memorial Stadium on Saturday (1 p.m.).
“I am excited to get out in front of our fans,” Klubnik said. “Hopefully, we will have a good showing. It looks like it is going to be great weather, so I am excited for that. I am pumped.”
The quarterback is also pumped about the format for this year’s spring game, Clemson announced on Wednesday.
In the game, the Clemson offense will be wearing orange jerseys, while the defense will wear white jerseys. There will be no teams, as head coach Dabo Swinney already announced they do not have enough players available to field two teams for the game.
This year’s Orange & White Spring Game will be played as a normal scrimmage. However, there will be a scoring system for the fans to follow.
“Just spot the ball and let’s go play,” Klubnik said. “That is really not up to me. I am just excited to go play football.”
The offensive team can score the traditional ways – touchdown (6 points + PAT), field goal (3 points) and 2-point conversion. There are eight ways in which the defense can score – force a three-and-out (1 point), missed PAT (1 point), stop on 2-point conversion (2 points), safety (2 points), takeaway (3 points), stop on fourth down (3 points), missed field goal (3 points) and defensive TD (6 points + PAT).
“I think it will be good,” Klubnik said. “I have never lost a spring game. I am pretty proud of that, so I wish there was a game, but I guess if there is not a true way of keeping score, and maybe they will. I don’t know how they are doing it, but I think it will be fun to have my guys out there.
“At least I will be running out with the guys I have been running out with in the spring. That will be awesome not having to split us up.”
