Could Clemson Football Lose Anyone New to Transfer Portal?

CLEMSON — At the moment, do not look for Clemson to go snagging anyone out of the transfer portal when it opens on April 16th.

“We do not need anybody right now. We feel good about where we are,” Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said after Saturday’s Orange & White Spring Game. “But that is why I am sitting here today. Ask me next week.”

Swinney, as of Saturday, is not expecting to lose anyone to the transfer portal, though he acknowledges that it can change fast.

“Who knows. Those are just things you have to respond to,” he said. “If everything stays the same today, we feel good about our roster. We have a lot of work to do, but we are ready to go to battle with the guys we got and let’s go compete. We like our guys.”

Like most when the House vs. NCAA settlement goes into effect on July 1, Clemson will trim its roster to 105 players, all of which have to be on scholarship. The walk-on program in the NCAA will be eliminated at that point.

“We already got to cut some guys. We have some walk-ons, and they will not be able to come back. So, if everybody stays, I will have to cut some more. That is if we try to go get some guys without other guys leaving,” Swinney said. “So, we will see, but who knows?

“We have been really good with retention, and I would expect that to stay the same. Maybe there are a couple of guys that move on. I don’t know. I really don’t. I have no idea, and I do not lose any sleep over it. I really don’t. So, whatever happens, we just go and respond to it. And we can, and we will. But we will see.”
