Parker On Clemson Defense: ‘Going to Be One Hell of a Season’

CLEMSON — One of the biggest benefactors of Tom Allen’s hiring as Clemson’s defensive coordinator might be T.J. Parker.

Allen’s aggressive scheme matches up well with Parker’s approach to the game, which should help take the junior defensive end’s game to a whole other level.

On top of what Allen brings from an X’s and O’s standpoint, the veteran coach has also instilled a different mindset with the Clemson defense, reminiscent of what was seen just a few short years ago when the unit was routinely one of the nation’s best.

“He’s brought a lot of juice,” Parker said. “I really love that. He brings a lot of confidence to the team. Instills it in us every day. That we can do whatever it takes. Makes the defense simple for us. Let’s us play fast and play to our strengths.”

Not only are the players loving the new energy Allen has brought to the defense, but according to Parker, he’s just like another one of the guys.

“He’s a guy that you can go into his office, sit and chill with every day,” Parker added. “My connection with him, my relationship with him is strong.”

Last season, Parker led the Tigers with 11 sacks, earning second-team All-ACC honors in the process. He also recorded 19.5 tackles for loss and set a new school record with six forced fumbles.

However, despite all of his success over his first two seasons, Parker still believes there’s another step he can take and he is extremely confident that Allen is the type of defensive mind that can help him get there.

“I am excited just to have him here with us,” Parker said. “His defensive style of play, the passion that he has towards the game. Anybody can grab it. I am glad to have him. My abilities and his coaching abilities together, it’s going to be one hell of a season.”
