Randall ‘Taking Bull By Horns’ at New Position

CLEMSON — Adam Randall isn’t your typical running back. Or is he?

Randall is built like a tank and his 225-pound frame has only helped with his transition to playing a new position.

The former wide receiver made the move to running back ahead of Clemson’s first-round College Football Playoff matchup against Texas. Phil Mafah was injured and Jay Haynes had just torn an ACL in the ACC Championship win over SMU, leaving the Tigers paper-thin at the position.

Enter Randall. The 6-foot-2 former wideout broke off a 41-yard run in the second quarter, giving fans a glimpse of his potential playing the position.

That move has since become permanent, as Randall spent the spring taking reps as the first-team running back.

“It’s been great,” Randall said. “Had the opportunity to go through spring and play running back. I know it is a little bit different of a position for me, but at the end of the day, it’s still football. I’m just taking the bull by the horns and going with it, making the most of my opportunities.”

Not only has the coaching staff raved about Randall’s abilities toting the rock, but some of his teammates have boasted about his move to running back, potentially making the offense more explosive.

“It’s just really good to have good teammates,” Randall added. “My teammates are really talented and they go out there and make me better every day.”

Clemson’s new running back didn’t play much in the spring game, getting only one carry. It was the younger backs on the roster who saw much of the action. Randall did have a 23-yard reception, showing how his skillset as a receiver will only help him become a more well-rounded running back.

However, the work he got during the spring leading up to the spring game has proven that he is capable, and Randall feels like if he can make plays against the Clemson defense in practice, he can make plays against any defense in the fall.

“You can’t go out there with the mindset of, ‘Oh, this is just a practice.’ It’s a game every single day,” Randall said. “Because you are going against one of the best defenses in the country. So I know if I am able to go out and produce and make big plays against those guys, I know I am going to be able to do it this fall.”
