Clemson Rallies to Beat Stanford

CLEMSON — Jacob Jarrell smacked his fourth home run in the last three games, including a solo shot in the bottom of the sixth inning, as No. 4 Clemson rallied to beat Stanford, 11-10, Saturday at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

Jarrell’s home run marked the third straight game he has launched a missile out of the ballpark. Saturday’s shot was a 427-foot blast just off centerfield and right into the scissor lift platform where the ACCN centerfield cameraman was working.

The win clinches the series for the Tigers, who have still not lost a season series this year.

In all, the Tigers and Cardinal combined for 28 hits, four of which were home runs and two doubles. It was definitely not a night for the pitchers. Stanford had eight two-out hits.

Starters Ethan Darden of Clemson and Ryan Speshyock of Stanford did not make it through the second inning. Speshyock, making his first career start, recorded just one out while allowing three runs, walking two and yielding a three-run blast to Collin Priest, who was 2-for-3 with 4 RBIs.

In all, Stanford (18-14, 5-12 ACC) threw seven pitchers, while Clemson put eight pitchers on the hill. Reed Garris, who allowed just one hit in 2 1/3 innings of work got the win.

Lucas Mahlstedt came on in the seventh inning for Garris to pick up his national leading 12th save of the year.

Jarrell’s home run gave the Tigers an 11-10 lead in the bottom of the sixth, which allowed Mahlstedt to come in and close the game.

Clemson (33-5, 11-3 ACC) has won eight straight games.

Besides Jarrell’s and Priest’s home runs, the Tigers also got a home run from Josh Paino in the fifth inning. Dominic Listi recorded an RBI single through the left side with one out in the fifth inning that tied the game at 10-10.

After Priest’s first inning home run, Stanford tied the game with three runs in the second inning, while Clemson answered with five more for an 8-5 lead after two innings. Listi, Priest, Gaffney and Paino had RBIs in the inning.

The Cardinal again came back in the third inning thanks to a Trevor Haskins home run. They put another run on the board in the third and then three more in the fourth inning to take a 10-8 lead.

Stanford had the tying run at second with two outs in the ninth and the go-ahead run on first when Mahlstedt got Rintaro Sasaki to hit into a force at first base to end the game.
