Clemson commitment Seth Beer has yet to meet Monte Lee, but he’s heard plenty of good things about the Tigers’ new head coach.
“All of my summer ball coaches, my high school coaches, a lot of people that I know have told me that he’s just a great guy and a great leader and just an all-around great coach,” Beer said.
Committed to enroll at Clemson in January, Beer remains on track to play his freshman year at Clemson, instead of finishing up his senior year at Lambert High School in Suwanee, Ga.
Beer reached that decision last fall when he committed to play for Jack Leggett. Bradley LeCroy, Leggett’s former assistant, will serve under Lee, so his continued presence in Tigertown is a plus for the 6-3, 205-pound outfielder.
“(LeCroy) was the first guy I talked to with recruiting,” Beer said, “So that makes me feel a lot more comfortable with Clemson and the thought that what he’s told me will be there with the hitting part and that kind of stuff.
“It’s good. Just to start off having that relationship with the coach, to know that relationship is going to still be there when I get there, it’s just great.”
Beer looks forward to building a relationship with Lee.
“Everything I’ve heard about him has been great things and I’m excited to go up there and meet him myself,” Beer said.
More familiar: A rising senior at Summerville-Pinewood Prep, right-handed pitcher Kris Kuhn knows Lee from when he was recruited to College of Charleston.
Kuhn (6-0, 165) committed to Clemson over South Carolina, College of Charleston and Furman.
“He’s obviously a great coach for Clemson,” he said. “Everywhere he’s gone, success has followed him. He was at Carolina…he kind of built the program up at College of Charleston.
“Now he’s up at Clemson, so good things are to come, definitely. I like him a lot. He seems like a good guy and a good coach.”
First act of business: A couple hours after Lee sent out his first tweet as the head coach at Clemson, Lee then tweeted that his first act of business was the contact members of the incoming freshmen class.
One of the soon-to-be Tigers is Buford, Ga. left-handed pitcher Jack Higginbotham.
“I’m looking forward to the opportunity ahead,” he said. “It’s going to be fun putting on the orange and purple and playing for Clemson.”
In last week’s MLB Draft, Higginbotham (6-0, 160) was picked by the Mets in the 27th round.
“Coach Lee called me (Thursday) and he sounds very excited and energized about the coming year. It’s going to be fun,” he said.
