Clemson started out ACC play with a 3-2 win over Georgia Tech in Doug Kingsmore Stadium on Friday night.
Georgia Tech entered the contest with one batter hitting below .270 and a .344 batting average for its starting lineup, but a great outing from Tigers starter Jacob Hennessy and a solid relief appearance from Ryan Miller kept the Yellow Jackets at bay.
Clemson head coach Monte Lee was impressed with the production he got from his pitchers.
“We really pitched today, no free passes which is outstanding,” Lee said. “I have to give Jacob Hennessy and Ryan Miller serious credit throwing only 115 pitches.”
Hennessy put together arguably his best start of the year in seven plus innings of work. He allowed six hits, one run, no walks, and struck out seven.
The Tigers took advantage of a few pitches up in the zone with a pair of solo homeruns from Seth Beer and Bryce Teodosio.
“We had early home runs from Teodosio and Beer even though we didn’t swing the bats extremely well,” Lee said. “However we were able to get them in the bullpen early and get Curry in the bullpen after five.”
Georgia Tech (9-3, 0-1) starting pitcher Xzavion Curry entered Friday’s game 3-0 with a 1.00 ERA after allowing just a pair of earned runs early in the season, both of which came off of solo home runs.
Beer continued that trend, driving a 3-2 pitch from Curry off the batting cages in right field to give Clemson a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
In the bottom of the third, the freshman Teodosio — who was hitless in his last 18 at-bats — went yard on a 1-1 pitch, hitting a solo shot to right center off the bottom of the scoreboard that gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead.
Georgia Tech cut the Tiger lead in the top of the fourth as Chase Murray scored on an RBI ground out by Kel Johnson.
In the top of the eighth, Colin Hall led off with a single forcing the Tigers to change pitchers and bring in Miller. Hall advanced on a sacrifice bunt before Murray singled down the left field line to tie the game at two.
Logan Davidson led off the bottom of the eighth with a single and advanced to third when Beer singled to the right side. Clemson (12-1, 1-0) jumped back in front with a run-scoring single up the middle by Patrick Cromwell giving it a 3-2 lead.
The Yellow Jackets threatened in the top of the ninth with a leadoff single by Kel Johnson who advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. However, Miller struck out Austin Wilhite and forced Luke Waddell to line out to second base.
Clemson will play the final two games of the series in a double-header Saturday. Game one is at noon and game two is 50 minutes following the conclusion of the first game.
