FSU Dashes Clemson’s ACC, CFP Hopes

Clemson came out on the wrong side of a game with a lot at stake.

Fourth-ranked Florida State handed Clemson a heartbreaking 31-24, overtime loss on Saturday at Death Valley.

And with it, the Seminoles dashed the Tigers’ ACC and College Football Playoff hopes.

A big win against FSU would’ve kept Clemson’s CFP hopes alive despite the season-opening loss at Duke.

Instead, after the loss to the Noles, the Tigers (2-2) are out of the CFP race four games into the 2023 season after coming into the year hoping to return to the playoff for the first time since 2020. No two-loss team has ever made the four-team CFP.

Clemson dropped to 0-2 in ACC play, and this marks the second time in three seasons that the Tigers have suffered two losses in the month of September.

The Tigers entered this year as the favorites to claim their eighth ACC Championship in nine seasons. An eighth consecutive win in the series vs. FSU (4-0, 2-0) would’ve revitalized Clemson’s chances of capturing the ACC crown yet again.

Now, while not officially eliminated, Clemson needs mayhem in the conference moving forward to get a shot at defending last year’s ACC title.

Clemson, which began the season ranked No. 9 nationally, suffered its first home conference loss since 2016 on Saturday.

The Tigers will look to get their first ACC win of the 2023 season next Saturday when they travel to play Syracuse (12 p.m., ABC).
