‘Good to see him smiling’: Raiders coach talks ‘crazy legs’ Renfrow

Hunter Renfrow’s production fell off during the Josh McDaniels era in Las Vegas, but the former Clemson star receiver has started to re-emerge in recent weeks since Antonio Pierce was named the Raiders’ interim head coach after McDaniels got fired on Nov. 1.

In the eight games this season with McDaniels as the head coach, Renfrow had just 10 catches for 92 yards. But he has already exceeded those numbers with 12 catches for 117 yards in the four games since Pierce took over.

It’s clear that Pierce and company have made an effort to get Renfrow more involved in the offense, and it’s evidently working. Pierce spoke recently about getting Renfrow going again and said “it’s good to see him happy” again.

“It’s good to see him smiling, loving football again,” he said. “That’s what I’m proud of and excited for him. Because you watched him being here for two years, just watch his morale – and when he gets going, it kind of uplifts everybody else… But I’m excited that we’re obviously finding ways to get him the ball, because he is a special player.”

Renfrow had four receptions for 38 yards against the Kansas City Chiefs last week after posting season-highs with five catches and 42 yards against the Miami Dolphins on Nov. 19 – including a highlight-reel 31-yard catch and run during which he hurdled a defender.

“Crazy legs, man,” Pierce said of Renfrow. “You watched that run the other day – you don’t know where he’s going, you don’t what he’s doing. It’s not very fast, but it’s efficient.”

A fifth-round pick of the Raiders in 2019, Renfrow has been highly productive in his NFL career overall, racking up 266 catches for 2,838 yards and 17 touchdowns in his pro career to date.
