CLEMSON — The young ones can make an impact, and one certainly did Saturday night at Bank of America Stadium.
While credit for the victory over No. 8 SMU in the ACC Championship goes to the entire team, it would be wrong not to pay attention to the efforts of freshman wide receiver Bryant Wesco Jr., who showed up in the game and majorly attributed to the Tigers’ 34-31 win.
“We knew what was on the line,” Wesco said following Nolan Hauser’s game-winning field goal from 56 yards out. “We all played with our hearts, and knowing that was one of the toughest games we’ve been a part of. Being able to go into this championship and win it like that, that’s one for the books for me.”
Wesco hauled in 143 yards off of eight receptions, taking two in for big touchdowns, both of them being in the first quarter. His play on offense, especially to start off the game, helped boost his team and gave early energy to his teammates.
“That’s what we have been stressing… just keep that energy up, and everybody will be pumped up,” Wesco said. “The energy stayed up on the sideline, and we didn’t falter. We didn’t give up.”
They certainly did not give up, and Wesco didn’t either. Even after a missed field goal in the second quarter, the Clemson offense put up 13 more points in the game, including Hauser’s game-winning field goal, which sent the Tigers to the College Football Playoff and earned them yet another ACC Championship.
Wesco added to Dabo Swinney’s comments earlier in the night, attributing his faith to the victory.
“You just gotta believe in God and know that He has everything planned out,” Wesco said.
An incredible night of football for both Wesco and the Tigers now leads to playoff contention, which will be revealed at noon on Sunday.
