Tigers’ Plan to win not as Simple as it Sounds

CLEMSON — The road of challenge for No. 12 seed Clemson is just getting started.

After narrowly defeating the SMU Mustangs in the ACC Championship on Dec. 7, Clemson earned a bid into the College Football Playoffs. Their opponent, however, is nothing short of scary.

The No. 5 seed Texas Longhorns, who compiled an 11-2 record this season, stay home in Austin to host the Tigers in the first round of the CFP Saturday at Darrell K. Royal Stadium in Austin, Texas. It’s sentimental for some, like quarterback and Texas native Cade Klubnik, but scary for everyone.

One of the biggest challenges the Tigers (10-3) face is the Longhorns’ massive offensive line.

“Texas’ offensive line is great,” defensive lineman Peter Woods said. “I think that’s one of the strengths of their team. They disguise screens and stuff very well, and we have to do what we’re supposed to and read stuff like that.”

The Longhorns’ O-line was a semifinalist for the Joe Moore Award, which aims to recognize the country’s most elite, tough, and skilled offensive line.

Led by Jake Majors and Hayden Conner, senior center and guard for the Longhorns, the unit helped produce on an offense that averaged 35.5 points per game.

One team that did well in stopping the Longhorns was No. 2 Georgia, who shut down Texas and beat them twice, including once in Austin earlier in the season.

“They just did a good job on film, playing assignment football,” Woods said. “I think that’s what it’ll come down to for us, just making sure that we don’t get too frenzied on some of the slower, developing runs, and just make sure we stay sound in our assignment.”

In their game against Texas, the Bulldogs held the Longhorns to just 31 rushing yards while sacking the quarterback six times.

The Tigers will look to replicate that defensive performance against Texas this Saturday in the first round of the CFP.
