Devin Alfred has made multiple trips to Clemson in the past, but the spring game on Saturday was his first time visiting as a recruit.
The 2028 wide receiver (Saraland, AL) is the younger brother of Ole Miss wideout Dillon Alfred, who was one of the Tigers’ top targets in the 2025 recruiting class. Alfred came to Clemson several times with his older brother when he visited, so he’s very familiar with the program.
However, getting to experience Clemson as a recruit himself allowed Alfred to see the program from a different perspective.
“As soon as I stepped off the bus onto the campus, I felt the love,” Alfred told The Clemson Insider. “The coaches welcoming me, walking up to me. Almost every coach walked up to me and spoke.”
Once he was inside the stadium, his feelings only amplified as he watched the Clemson receivers take part in pregame warmups.
“Soon as I was able to watch the players run routes, TJ Moore, Tristan Smith, Bryant Wesco, it was just a different type of feeling,” Alfred added. “It’s something you can’t explain.”
And Alfred was more than grateful that he was one of the handful of 2028 players brought in over the weekend.
“Clemson, of course, they haven’t really dug deep in the ’28 class,” Alfred said. “So for me to be a ’28 out there, that means a lot. Just coaches digging in for my grade and showing love, wanting to build relationships. So when it’s time for me to make a decision we’ve already have been carrying all the relationships and building them.”
Georgia and Auburn have also gotten spring visits, and Alfred still plans to make stops at Kentucky, Arkansas, Ole Miss, Texas A&M and Southern Cal. He also said he might add a couple more visits to the schedule.
With his brother at Ole Miss and the Rebels being his first offer, some might see Lane Kiffin’s program as the team to beat, but Alfred says not so fast. He is looking to create his own legacy. At the same time, it’s very beneficial having an older brother who has already been through the recruiting process.
“I’m not gonna let his decision affect where I want to go. I want to blaze my own path,” Alfred said. “I am looking at playing with him down the road in the NFL. But it is also a good thing that I was able to go on all these visits with him. I’m familiar with all the coaches and a lot of these schools.”
The Tigers are still more than a year away from handing out offers to players in the 2028 class, but Alfred already knows that is one offer he is looking to earn.
“That would mean a lot,” Alfred said. “That relationship has been actually there since last year. I am already familiar with the coaching staff. That would be great. I would be very thankful, very blessed. Clemson barely offers kids, they don’t go to the portal much. So when they offer you, you know they really want you.”
