Bakich Looking for ‘Fun, Rowdy’ Crowd as Tigers Usher In New Era

CLEMSON —After being on the road for the last two weekends, the Clemson Baseball team returns to Doug Kingsmore Stadium this week.

The Tigers are fresh off a weekend sweep of Cal that saw Erik Bakich’s team move up to No. 4 in the latest D1 Baseball rankings. Clemson comes in at 30-5 overall and 9-3 in ACC play, which is good for first place in the conference standings.

The Tigers’ pitching staff helped lead the charge in the weekend sweep, holding the Bears to just 10 total runs across the three-game series.

“Tough to sweep, tough to win on the road, and our guys earned a hard-fought sweep this weekend against a really good Cal team,” Bakich said. “The pitching, the defense, the timely hitting all weekend was outstanding. The pitching staff only issued five walks all weekend, which is just an outstanding effort.”

Before the sweep of Cal, Clemson went on the road and took two out of three from a Top 25 Georgia Tech team. There was also a midweek win over Georgia Southern, played at SRP Park in North Augusta.

Next up is a midweek matchup back at home against Gardner-Webb on Wednesday. The Bulldogs are 14-18 overall and 4-5 in conference play. Then Clemson will host Stanford (18-12, 5-10 ACC) this weekend for a three-game set.

“Look forward to getting back to DKS,” Bakich said. “It’s been a couple of weeks. Got a lot to celebrate at DKS. We got some new features.”

Fans making the trek in this week can also expect a radical change inside the stadium. Clemson ushered in a new era for its spring game over the weekend, with beer sales making its debut inside of Memorial Stadium. Now, that era begins for baseball.

Prior to the season, Bakich teased that alcohol sales would be coming to DKS this season, and this week, that feature finally makes its debut for baseball. The Tigers’ third-year head coach fully believes this is something that will enhance the fan experience at Clemson while also creating an environment that will make it even tougher on opposing teams.

“Looking forward to seeing everybody out in a fun, rowdy fashion,” Bakich added. “Going to be a great week of ball ahead.”
