CLEMSON — Jacob Jarrell hit two home runs, helping propel No. 4 Clemson to a 4-2 win over Gardner-Webb on Wednesday night at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
Jarrell’s first homer, a solo shot out to left in the sixth, broke a 2-2 tie. His second, another solo shot out to left, would come in the eighth, giving Clemson relievers all the cushion they would need. Jarrell now has a team-high seven home runs this season and would finish the night 2-for-4 with the two RBI.
Collins Priest accounted for the team’s other two hits, also finishing 2-for-4, with one RBI.
Drew Tiitsworth was stellar in relief, throwing a career-high 4.1 innings of perfect baseball in picking up the win (3-0). He struck out seven, another career-high.
Talan Bell made his third start of the season, going two-plus innings without allowing a run. The freshman allowed one hit and struck out one while walking two.
Clemson (31-5) got on the board first with two runs in the third. After Dominic Listi walked to lead off the inning, he would quickly move to second on a wild pitch. Jarren Purify followed that with a walk and the two runners ended up at second and third after a wild pitch. A fielder’s choice by Cam Cannarella drove in Listi, then a single back up the middle by Priest drove in Purify to make it 2-0.
The Bulldogs (14-20) would tie it up in the top of the fifth despite registering just one hit in the frame. Joe Allen issued a leadoff walk to Lawson Knight, and he would move to second on a wild pitch and then to third on a sacrifice bunt. Nathan Dvorsky then came on relief and walked Aaron Morgan, the first hitter he faced. Morgan then stole second, putting runners at second and third with one out. After a pop-up to Andrew Ciufo, Knight would come across on a two-out single by Ryan Kennell. With runners on the corners, Kennell then attempted to steal second, which allowed Morgan to score from third and tie the game at 2-2. Kennell would ultimately be tagged out in a run-down.
Jarrell led off the bottom of the sixth by launching a solo shot out to left, putting Clemson back in front 3-2.
Jarrell’s second solo shot came in the eighth, putting the Tigers up 4-2.
It Was Over When
When Jarrell launched his second homer of the night in the eighth, putting the Tigers up by two, that was too great a deficit for the Bulldogs. The Clemson bullpen was just too good on this night.
Tough Night at Plate
After averaging more than seven runs per game in the weekend sweep at Cal, the Tigers managed only four runs against a Gardner-Webb team that was just 4-11 on the road coming into tonight. Clemson mustered only four base hits and were just 1-of-11 with runners on and 1-of-8 with runners in scoring position.
Bullpen Continues to Get It Done
The bullpen continues to be a major strength for this team. After Talan Bell pitched to just one hitter in the second, three Clemson relievers combined to limit the Bulldogs to just two runs on one hit over the final seven innings. Tiitsworth stole the show with his performance.
Alcohol Sales Debut in DKS
